The rapid mood swings, insomnia, the drop in energy levels and feeling foggy in the head may be signs that you’re pushing yourself too hard.

When we’re in business for ourselves, this is so common. We have to be the jack of all trades and we feel like we’re responsible to be present and switched on at all times. We feel that if we take time out our business won’t keep going or that we haven’t got the processes or team in place for things to run smoothly and automatically in the background.

I wanted to share a bit about my journey and help you to understand what it feels like and what you can do when you are in this mind frame. So 15 years ago, when I started my first business, an organic health food store and naturopathic clinic called Organic Matters, I was on a mission to help educate my community that there were alternatives to popping a pill.

That food was truly thy medicine, and you could prevent dis ease through making better choices with food and support wellness with a balance of nutrition, exercise, and mindset. During these years, I felt like I was committed 200 percent to my customers. I was working over 60 hours a day, sorry, 60 hours a week, if only we had 60 hours in a day.

I’d be doing that. I was the one responsible for taking care of the day to day admin, seeing clients, procurement, HR, marketing, you name it, I was doing it. I remember becoming so obsessed with my business that when friends would call to go out, I’d tell them, no, I was too busy. And I saw myself going home in the evenings, being so exhausted that immediately after dinner, Get into bed and lie there, wide awake with all these 101 thoughts racing through my mind.

Keeping me wide awake for hours on end. Because there was just so much that I felt responsible for. Responsible for my clients, responsible for the business, responsible for the staff that I had as well. Fast forward and 10 years ago, I found myself sitting in my car on my way to work, bawling my eyes out.

Now, this was not a one off thing. I was doing this day after day after day for months. I started to feel stressed, run down. I couldn’t think clearly. All I could reach for was something sweet like chocolate every day just to feel like I was getting a bit of a pick me up. And I really couldn’t see what was happening for myself until I spoke to a naturopath friend of mine and she told me, My friend, you’re showing clear signs of burnout.

Me? Burnout? I wanted to ask her. I could not believe it. After everything that I know as a naturopath, how could I be going through a burnout? I help clients with burnout. I did confirm it with follow up tests. And this is the point where I was confronted with the realization where I knew that something had to change, and it had to change now.

Otherwise, I was truly on a downward spiral that had no end in sight. So this is when I made the painful decision to say farewell to my organic health food store. And I went into private practice instead. I reassessed the way that I was running my businesses and started implementing Automation processes to take care of things like bookings, accounting, and marketing.

I also employed a team that assisted with supporting me and my clients. Through this, I was able to focus on my niche, to build a successful business, and have more time for myself to pursue the other passions that I had. I changed the model of how I saw clients and focused on my niche of women with adrenal fatigue and thyroid issues.

I developed successful personal and group programs which helped hundreds of women throughout Australia. These automation processes Along with my support team, a new business model truly saved my life, giving me back my freedom, my energy, and my zest for being here. It allowed me to live a more fulfilled life.

Along with these, there were three pieces of advice that I continued to follow. The first was to believe in yourself. I feel like I had let that go along the way and it was At this point where I started to remind myself that we have the knowledge, we have the education, we’ve got the skills to be successful.

We just have to believe in ourselves and remember that we are here to share our message. Our message will help those who are looking to transform their lives. Secondly, take care of you first. With me, that’s something I really had to learn to do. Our health and our well being has to come first because without this we can’t be of service to anyone else.

It’s time to listen to your body to find a balance that works for you. It’s okay to reach out and remember there’s always tomorrow and thirdly Take action. I can’t stress this one enough. So many times I see my clients just sitting back and not taking action. When we sit around and start thinking about how your life could be and you have this vision of what you want, unfortunately it’s not going to miraculously improve.

We do have to take action if we want things to change. Taking action Even imperfect action moves us closer to living the fulfilled life that we deserve. This time that I now had gave me an opportunity to add marketing and coaching to my skill set and to co author the best selling book Elevate Your Health, in which I shared my journey and provided guidelines to re establishing your health and overcoming burnout or adrenal fatigue as it’s often called.

You may be wondering, How do I know if I’m experiencing burnout? Well, earlier I pointed to three common signs, as well as my own experience. However, it is important to note that there’s several stages with burnout, and it doesn’t happen overnight. This is something that progressively worsens as a result of us continuing to push through and ignore those signs.

Oftentimes we start with feelings of heightened energy, of being able to push through and thrive under pressure. The type A personality. When we continue to pressure ourselves, this is when it leads to us moving along the curve, where our mood goes from feeling happy and energetic to feeling flat and unmotivated.

Then into the third stage, where we start to feel really low, exhausted, unable to think clearly, feeling foggy, experiencing insomnia, and waking up exhausted. Really struggling to focus. In my book, I go through each stage and the symptoms linked to them. If you’d like a free copy of this bestseller, head to

Stress doesn’t always have to be negative. We do need a certain degree of stress, which can be a great motivator.

However, the consistency and level of stress and also the length of time that it continues. These are the driving factors that push us into that fight or flight mode. And these are the factors that cause our adrenals, nervous system and endocrine system to start experiencing imbalances leading to the symptoms we then exhibit.

Now I’m not going to get super technical and get back into my nature. pathic head frame, but I do want to just share some practical tips with you because as business owners, it’s time that you take that stress and alleviate it to move your body back to feeling energetic and supporting your adrenal glands and entire whole body so that you can continue to build a successful foundation for your business.

These form part of my Business Breakthrough Program. Finding the balance between life and business. It’s important, firstly, to identify your values, because what you believe will dictate how you run your business and who you want to work with. Without this clarity, people often drift from one thing to another, chopping and changing their business structure, offers, and even audiences, which in the end is tiring and can lead to feelings of frustration.

Or literally wanting to throw the towel in. Secondly, set boundaries from day one. I know this may be hard to do because you think that there’s so much that you’ve got to cover in your business and it already feels like there’s not enough hours in the work week. Trust me, when you block out time for yourself each week, this is when you really start to utilize the business time more effectively.

Instead of spending an hour scrolling through social media or checking emails, you’ll find yourself valuing that hour and using it to focus on your business growth. You may like to have your me time as a Friday blocked off or not working on a Wednesday afternoon. Whatever works for you, but I do encourage you to find that time and block it off in your calendar.

Right now. Yes, you heard me. Grab that calendar or diary out and start blocking that timeout every week, infinitely. No temptations to open this time up again. I know that I block out my Fridays and ever since I started doing that, it’s given me the opportunity to explore my creative side. I started to get back into my.

Art classes, which I love. And I always find that with that day off or with those few hours off, I actually feel more inspired and creative when I come back to my business because it’s given me the mental and physical space. To make things happen, to see things in a new way and to process everything that’s been happening in your work week.

And thirdly, lay the foundations of your business. Don’t rush this and don’t think that’ll be fine. Because this is where I see most businesses fall over time. They haven’t spent time mapping out their financial plan or identified their marketing strategy. And this leads to erratic choices, a lot of uncertainty, which fuels the stress response in the body.

And it can cascade into symptoms described above. For more details on the signs that you’re, if you’re experiencing burnout, or even to understand what you can do to shift.
